- Focusing on the Trinity of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity

Today, the Eastern Learning (Donghak 東學) Peasant Movement is being re-evaluated as a modern movement comparable to the French Revolution, and Daesoon (大巡) Thought is attracting attention as a spontaneous ideology that can explain the changes in the modern world through the traditional Eastern thought. This dissertation centers on the concept of “donghak” as a method of thought in Eastern philosophy and aims to demonstrate that the two systems of thought (Donghak and Daesoon) both built East Asia's indigenous modernity through the reconstruction of trinitarian cosmology of Heaven, Earth and Humankind.

Donghak and Daesoon thought have been widely discussed separately as East Asia's indigenous modernity in comparison to postmodern philosophy. However, existing discussions of indigenous modernity have not emphasized their shared Eastern origins with Western modernity.

Furthermore, the two ideologies have not been studied in relation to each other in terms of the overarching Eastern philosophical system of thought manifested in the concept of “Donghak.” Based on the concept of multiple modernities as the “rearrangement of the sacred and the secular,” this dissertation compares the self-generated modernity of the Heavenly, Earthly, and Human views through the Eastern philosophical method of correlative thinking and aims to show the value of the two ideas more clearly.

As a detailed methodological approach to the comparison, this dissertation draws on three anthropological approaches to religion: A.C. Graham's theory of correlative thought, Victor Turner's theory of liminality, and Anthony Wallace's theory of revitalization movements. The reason for applying all three theories simultaneously is that they work well together in a comparative study. First, the correlative theory of thought clarifies the epistemological differences between Eastern and Western ways of thinking, thus clarifying the difference between indigenous modernity and modernity. Second, the theory of liminality is valid for explaining the process of relocation in modernity, which is the relocation of sacred rituals, and third, the theory of revitalization is useful for explaining the inheritance of tradition in the process of relocation.

The indigenous modernity of Donghak and Daesoon Thought began as a response to a problem posed by Matteo Ricci, a Jesuit priest on a mission in the East prior to European imperialist invasions. Matteo Ricci criticized the East Asian view of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity as overemphasizing rationalization, which emphasized only the attributes of Heaven and Earth, while lacking the personal divine qualities of Heaven and Earth. In response, Donghak Thought and Daesoon Thought proposed a reorganization of the sacred and the secular that integrated the Eastern and Western views of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity through concepts of the emergence of an external Heaven and a human avatar of the transcendent Heaven. Based on correlative reasoning, the transcendental Heaven invisioned by these two systems of thought was able to integrate the best aspects of the Eastern and Western views of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity.

Whereas the Western view of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, which emphasizes substance, has those entities as differentiated, the Eastern Trinitarian Cosmology of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, which emphasizes attributes, has them as assimilative, condensed, and grafted. In response, Donghak Thought attempted to unite the East and West by proposing the transcendent view of Heaven, the subsequent materialization of Earth, and a anthropocentric view of Humanity as co-equal to Heaven. First appearing in the 4,617-year history of civilization in East Asia, which traces its origins to the Yellow Emperor (黃帝), Donghak's view of Heaven and Earth resonated with the Joseon society and developed into a large-scale peasant movement. However, because it failed to overcome the limitations of Confucianism, the idea of Donghak eventually lost favor and became a disruptive and tumultuous movement.

In response, Daesoon Thought rediscovered the functions of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity latent in Eastern thought by combining the concepts of Heaven, Earth, and Divinity in a materialization theory under the premise of divine incarnation via a human body and the principle that divine beings and human beings are interdependent. The functions of the external Heaven and divine beings latent in Eastern thought were rediscovered through the concept of mutual guidance between divine beings and human beings, and the realms of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity from the perspective of external Heaven, was reactivated as Donghak Thought failed to realize these notions due to the limitations of Confucianism under which they operated. Daesoon Thought redefined Donghak Thought through the doctrines of Haewon Sangsaeng (the Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficence) and Boeun Sangsaeng (the Grateful Reciprocation of Favors for Mutual Beneficence), and built a indigenous modernity that combined correlative reason among Heaven, Earth, and divine beings that could be applied to everyday phenomena. In accordance with the Daesoon Thought's tenets of Virtuous Concordance of Yin and Yang, Harmonious Union between Divine Beings and Human Beings, Resolution of Grievances for Mutual Beneficence, and Perfected State of Unification with the Dao, Daesoon Thought presented a new indigenous modernity that is in harmony with correlative ideas such as the Three Realms (三界 samgye) of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, the Later World, Mutual Beneficence, the Dao of gods, the earthly paradise, and earthly immortality, and presented Trinitarian Cosmology of Heaven, Earth and Humanity as the True Eastern Learning (Chamdonghak).
